We are pleased to announce our upcoming edition of the Finsec Dialogue on “SEBI's Proposal to Regulate Index Providers" to be held on Twitter Spaces on January 25, 2023 at 7:00 PM.
Widely considered as 'barometers' of the economy, market indices serve as benchmarks for measuring the performance of the stock market and identifying emerging trends and mimicking market behaviour. Besides this, market indices are also used to create index-linked investment products, such as index funds, which mimic the composition and performance of an index, with minimal efforts from the fund manager. Rising demand for passive investment products in the recent years has, in turn, led to multiple concerns surrounding the discretion exercised by index providers and conflict of interest in the administration of an index.
Taking note of the above, on December 28, 2022 SEBI issued a consultation paper proposing a regulatory framework for index providers, in an attempt to ensure transparency and accountability in the governance and administration of an index. Based on the recommendations of a working group, the consultation paper envisages several salient features for the proposed framework, including internal processes for conflict management, maintaining quality of benchmark and periodic review by external auditors.
In this edition of Finsec Dialogue, we will discuss the key features of the framework proposed by SEBI for index providers, and the implications arising therefrom.
